Next: Siciliy

Our fellow foodie-and-wino friends, the Rs, took us out to Next for their Sicily menu on Thursday. We look to them for a lot of the restaurant recommendations, since they are usually one of the first people to hit up any new places. The last time we went to Next, we’d tagged along for the Thailand menu.

The Sicilian menu was great! Hehe, none of us have been down to Sicily, and according to Goethe, we have then not “seen Italy at all, for in Sicily lies the key to everything”. We’ll take his word for that. But we enjoyed the rustic, mostly family-style dishes (the starter medley of aracine and garlic charred artichoke were superb). And the wine pairings – they were most generous with the pours. We had a half bottle of the Petrucco Friulano, Colli Orientali del Friuli, 2008, that tasted most unusual and went beautifully with the generous steak of swordfish. Curiously, our only red was the Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino 2007. It was yummy, but where was the Nero d’Avola?

Huge hunk of pork shoulder for the table. We tried valiantly, but couldn’t finish the tender-slide-off-fork meat, not with the four dessert courses to follow!
