We caught the Book of Mormon last night. Frankly, after all the rave reviews by friends, we felt somewhat cheated, let down.
Sure, the musical had its funny moments, but mostly, we thought it was just an expensive live South Park episode, and not even one of the wittier ones. Too many cheap jokes. Don’t get me wrong, crude jokes can be funny, but not when it’s repeated one too many times. “I’ve got maggots in my scrotum!”, announces the African tribal leader, at random moments. Uhh ok – we’re supposed to find this hilarious?
Wish the singing was better too. The lead character, Arnold Cunningham, was a great comic, but his croaking couldn’t much pass for singing. Meh. Give me Les Miserables and Avenue Q anytime. Or Rent, or Chicago.
