Chicago over Labor Day Weekend

Jeff’s parents and brother came into town this past weekend. Happily, the storm clouds didn’t derail most of our planned activities. Though we didn’t get to hit the farmer’s market, we did get to stroll around Promontory Point down in Hyde Park. We parked by the Shoreland, my first year dormitory that has since been sold and converted into apartments for rent. I still remember my first mid-Autumn festival by the Point. More than 10 of us gathered by the water’s edge to admire the full moon and to reminisce of all the delicious fare we’d left back in Singapore. We shared a single mooncake, carefully sliced, between us.

The view of downtown Chicago from the Point never fails to take my breath away

We also drove to Wooded Isle, behind the Museum of Science and Industry, for a stroll. I’d never been before, despite having lived just a stone’s throw away from it when I was still in Hyde Park. It’s a beautiful bit of nature preserve, full of prairie shrubs and lush trees. There’s also a small, neatly manicured Japanese garden on its northern edge, where we spied a large heron perched placidly by the edge of the pond.

The rains stayed away most of Sunday too, so after dim sum in Chinatown, we walked off the calories at Lincoln Park.

And on this morning, before we sent them off to the airport, we packed a picnic basket of coffee, kiwi, strawberries, grapefruit and egg tarts and drove to the lake front. Jeff, Joe and I set up the slackline and played on it, as well as a bit of tennis using the line as the net, while the parents took a little stroll by the water and then relaxed in the shade.

Ahh, on gorgeous days like these, I can’t help but love all the outdoors that Chicago has to offer.
